What happened to
The Golden Years
Where I could get away with anything?
Now it seems I’m yesterday’s tears
And just spare parts
for a submarine.

We don't care about your private jet
as long as it gets you away from here
We don't care about your private jet
as long as it keeps you away from what's important

Fizzy on the Beach

There’s a beach
That lets you shimmer
A time-loop in a messed-up world
I was beholden
You were golden
Fascination in a messed-up head
And I said
Do we really have to go back?
Isn’t this fine and isn’t this cool?
Was I mistaken?
You sat on the rock
It was a fashion choice.
And if you remember
Don’t forget
To send me a postcard
A postcard of a European sunset
And all the odd colours
Seemed to make sense
I waited a long time for a colour like this
Dripping with diamonds of water
I guess part of you will always put me in a fever
I don’t claim to be your best option
But you can always wrap me around your finger
And when we have to vote in kind
We’ll do so together
I want to see kindness
Cascading off you

Back Alley Kisses
05:24
|
|
||
The back alleys are bleeding out on the town
They are the magnets for the litter swirling around
a piss-breeze wafts out to the bus stop.
This one through the houses leads to the chip shop
And this one is where the girls and boys go
For a little broken streetlight privacy.
There’s trepidation going through them late
But the need for a shortcut means you only hesitate
And he says, “I know a shortcut through here, come on.”
“And what if that is the last thing you ever say?” she asks…
And then they’re kissing where the alleys are.
Different ones home to different crews
So you had to know which ones to choose.
And that’s the truth.
They kissed under the extractor fan hum
Down by the fast-food place doing two-for-one
And that’s a deal.
He went commando; she didn’t wear a bra
All the grease and loving raining down on the cars
And they were kissing where the alleys are.
Then at some point they came up for air
They couldn’t go home but they were happy right there
“If you want be with me,” she said
“meet me there away from the speed cameras.”
And then she said no more…
They were kissing where the alleys are

The Seduction of Dessert

The fork wants to stab
The knife wants to slice
The dessert wants to please
But it’s always far too nice

An Obvious Man
01:34
|
|
||
Call me from education hallways
Wake me up and fill my ear
Hard luck shakes
We’re different shapes
Say you love me: lalala
I’ll shake off the dust tonight
And stand beneath my new spotlight
I stretch across the day
I do.
Dye my hair
And let the brick that I Jack-built earth me down
People fill my circumference
They know my routine and push it round
Dizzy at the first signs of better days
But undermined in a thousand ways
Someone somewhere must be free
But who knows what to think about
But: poverty, poverty, poverty?

Guns of Gold and Silver
03:49
|
|
||
Give our son the golden gun
And to our daughter the silver one
With bullets made of diamonds
To battle the beasts and conmen.
Give them arrows made of iron
To shoot the Angel of Death swooping down
A crystal dagger to ward off stalkers
And for the insults: a shield of stone.
Protection
Give them protection.
